The Case Study: TopTutor- Raising Start-Up Capital, China
The Challenge:
This week you have the first chance to evaluate how and what you have learned in a professional sense over the last weeks, when we have your Live MICA of the semester with TopTutor's Chairman!
Here are the questions that he would appreciate you addressing in your team reports for Wednesday:
1) How would you enter the Chinese market if you were advising TopTutor?
2) Being such a big country, how would you know where to locate yourself?
3) How about IP? Would you be afraid to release details of your idea? How can you protect your IP for a service like TT in China or elsewhere for that matter?
4) What kind of new start ups are likely to succeed in China - are there demands for specific products / services in the EdTech sector, for example?
5) What would be the advantages / disadvantages of setting up in China rather than your home country?
6) What risks do you foresee for a UK start up, like TT, in China?
By the way as a reminder, teams are to REPORT as follows and give us much attention to the opportunities (e.g. market growth rates) as risks (e.g. currency, etc). EFFECTUAL AND CAUSAL ACTIONS are encouraged:
1. Kaushal, Charlie, etc al's Team: are to consider the 1. macro regulations and risks & opportunities e.g. Platform risks + opps , cyber risks + opps , channel/platform distribution opp + risks, content controls/ownership, general technology risks + opps
2. Nahuel's Team: are to consider the 2. local/regional (China) incentives, country specific risks + opps (macro indicators- currency risk, etc) , risks & opportunities for starting a business in China e.g. funding sources and incentives, local private investors (individual and institutional )local subsidies, start-up culture in China, lock-in risks with incentives, exit penalties
3. Can Hugo's Team and Alexei's Teams please remind me which section between 3. [Business Models + Early Adopters] and 4. [EdTech Sector/Market (Global) and Competition (Local)] you are considering respectively ? I forgot ;(
4. You will see that each team's focus will have a different emphasis of response to the above questions and issues for TopTutor to consider in your proposals! Please make sure your proposals are supported by a professionally laid out document (either PDF or PPT file) to share with the Chairman
5. I have attached the photo of the whiteboard with highlights. Please note that ALL teams needed to give their considered response to issue of sources of finance and funding . Who should TopTutor typically be targeting with proposals for real financiers that they can approach, etc
Paul and I are super excited to see what you deliver
Best for your weekends
